Top 10 Beaches on Maui (From a Local’s Perspective)

Weekend Getaway | View Print

If you’ve ever been to Maui—or even just dreamed of visiting—you already know that the beaches here are something else. Each one has its own personality… some are peaceful and tucked away, others full of energy and life.

As someone who lives and paints on this island, I’ve spent years walking these shores, watching the light change, listening to the rhythm of the waves. The beach is more than a backdrop—it’s part of our way of life.

If you’re planning a visit and wondering where to start, here’s a local’s take on the top 10 beaches on Maui—what they’re known for, when to go, and why they’re worth a visit.

1. Kāʻanapali Beach

This is one of Maui’s most famous beaches—and for good reason. Stretching along the resort area of West Maui, Kāʻanapali has soft sand, clear water, and plenty of space to walk or relax. You’ll also find Black Rock at the northern end, a popular spot for cliff diving and snorkeling.

2. Makena Beach (Big Beach)

Known for its wide, golden shoreline and powerful shore break, Big Beach lives up to its name. It’s beautiful, dramatic, and a must-see—but do be cautious in the water here. When the waves are calm, it’s pure magic.

3. Wailea Beach

Set in one of Maui’s most luxurious resort areas, Wailea Beach is clean, calm, and great for swimming. Palm trees sway overhead, and there’s a paved coastal path that connects nearby beaches. It’s lovely at sunrise or sunset for a quiet walk.

4. Napili Bay

This crescent-shaped bay feels cozy and inviting. It’s great for families, swimming, and snorkeling on calm days. The beach sits in front of small condos and low-key resorts, giving it a laid-back charm that still feels connected to local life.

5. Hamoa Beach (Hana)

Venture down the Road to Hana and you’ll be rewarded with this stunning beach framed by cliffs and tropical greenery. It’s one of the most beautiful beaches on the island, with soft sand and strong waves—perfect for body surfing or simply taking it all in.

6. Baldwin Beach Park

Located on Maui’s North Shore, just past Paia, Baldwin Beach is long and open, with turquoise water and mountain views. There’s a strong local presence here—mornings are great for walking or jogging, and the waves can be fun for more confident swimmers.

7. Kamaole Beach Parks I, II & III

Known locally as Kam 1, Kam 2, and Kam 3, these three adjacent beaches in Kihei are popular with both residents and visitors. Great for swimming, picnicking, or catching the sunset, they offer an easygoing, friendly beach day experience.

8. Kapalua Bay

Sheltered and serene, Kapalua Bay is one of the best snorkeling spots on the island. The water here is usually calm, with coral reefs near the shoreline and plenty of tropical fish to admire. Bring your mask and snorkel—you’ll want to stay a while.

9. Oneʻuli Black Sand Beach

Located near Makena, this beach is striking with its dark lava sand and red cliffs. It’s less crowded, making it a peaceful spot to reflect, photograph, or explore. The sand is hot by midday, so early mornings are best.

10. Ho’okipa Beach Park

If you want to watch surfers and windsurfers in their element, this is the place. Ho’okipa is world-renowned for its waves, especially in winter. It’s not ideal for swimming, but it’s absolutely worth a visit—especially at golden hour, when the sea turtles start coming ashore to rest.

A Note Before You Go

Maui’s beaches are beautiful, but they’re also powerful. Conditions can change quickly, so always pay attention to posted signs and lifeguard recommendations. And of course—leave the beach better than you found it.

Whether you’re soaking in a sunrise, diving into clear water, or just letting the sand warm your feet, I hope your time here stays with you long after you’ve left.

If you find yourself near Paia during your visit, I’d love to invite you into my gallery. Many of the beaches I’ve shared here have made their way into my work—through color, light, and feeling. You’ll recognize them in the brushstrokes. You’ll feel the salt air and sunlight woven into the canvas.

The gallery is open by appointment only,

so let’s plan your visit! Simply call me at 808-281-3108 to schedule your showing. Not on island? Shop my prints and originals online anytime.

Come say hello. I’d love to hear which beach moved you the most.

With aloha,

Kim

The Difference Between Original Art and Limited Edition Prints

There’s something special about bringing art into your home—it becomes part of your everyday story.

Whether it’s hanging above your breakfast table or greeting you at the front door, art has the power to make a space feel personal, lived-in, and loved.

And if you’ve ever found yourself standing in front of a painting wondering, “Should I invest in the original… or is a print just as meaningful?”—you’re not alone.

It’s one of the most common questions I hear, and one I love to answer because the truth is, both originals and limited edition prints carry heart, soul, and value. They’re just different kinds of treasures.

Let’s walk through the difference together!

What Makes a Piece “Original”

An original painting is the very first expression of an idea. It’s the canvas I stood in front of while the morning light poured into my studio, the one I touched with my own hands, layer by layer. Every brushstroke is real—full of motion and texture. You can feel the movement of the paint, see the tiny imperfections, the pencil lines hiding just beneath the surface.

No two originals are alike. They carry the energy of the moment they were created. And for collectors, that one-of-a-kind presence is often what makes an original so special. It’s a connection—to the artist, to the process, and to a story only that piece can tell.

What Are Limited Edition Prints?

Limited edition prints are created from original paintings, but they’re made using high-quality fine art printing techniques. I only release a certain number of each image, and every one is signed and numbered to mark its place in the edition.

While they aren’t originals, they aren’t mass-produced either. They’re thoughtfully crafted and printed on archival paper or canvas, preserving the richness, color, and detail of the original piece.

And once a print edition is sold out—that’s it. No more are made. That’s what makes it a limited edition.

Prints are a beautiful way to collect art you love, especially if the original has already been sold or isn’t within your current budget. They allow more people to connect with the work and bring something meaningful into their homes.

How to Choose What’s Right for You

There’s no wrong choice—just the one that feels most aligned with your heart and your home.

If you’re drawn to texture, uniqueness, and the idea of owning something no one else in the world has, an original might be the right path for you. Originals often become legacy pieces—works that are passed down, cherished, and remembered.

If you’re creating a gallery wall, designing a calming space, or simply want to enjoy art that moves you, a limited edition print offers accessibility and beauty in equal measure.

Many of my collectors have both. They invest in an original when a piece deeply resonates, and they build their collection with prints that reflect the same spirit.

The Heart Behind Both

At the end of the day, both originals and prints begin the same way—with inspiration, intention, and gratitude. Every painting I create is born from my time here on Maui… from quiet moments, crashing waves, and the deep joy of creating something that might speak to someone else.

Whether it’s the one-and-only original or one of a limited number of prints, my hope is always the same—that it finds its way into the right hands. Into your hands.

Because when art makes you feel something when it lingers in your mind long after you’ve walked away… that’s when you know it belongs to you.

Thank you for inviting art into your life. Thank you for seeing the soul in each piece.

With Aloha and so much gratitude,

Kim

How to Hang Oversized Artwork with Confidence

Tides of Paradise | View Painting

There’s something deeply powerful about oversized art.

It has a presence. It breathes life into a room. And when chosen with heart and hung with intention, it can transform a space from simply “beautiful” to soul-stirring.

But I know from experience—hanging a large piece of art can feel like a commitment. The wall feels too big. Or too small. The piece looks perfect leaning casually against the wall, and you tell yourself you’ll hang it soon… but soon turns into someday.

If this sounds familiar, you’re in good company.

So today, I want to walk with you through this process—gently and with ease—so you can hang your oversized artwork with confidence.

Choose a Place That Feels Anchored

Oversized pieces love being the heart of a room. Think above a sofa, fireplace, or bed—or even standing alone on a large open wall. The key is to give the piece space to breathe.

Let it speak.

Before you reach for a measuring tape, take a moment to simply sit in the room. Watch how the light moves through the space. Notice where your eyes are naturally drawn. Often, that’s exactly where your art wants to live.

Hang at Eye Level—or Just Below

A simple guide: aim for the center of the artwork to land about 57–60 inches from the floor. That’s average eye level and usually creates a sense of harmony.

If you’re hanging your piece above furniture, like a couch or console, leave about 6–12 inches of space in between so the art and furniture feel connected, not crowded.

But truthfully? You don’t need to overthink it. If it feels right to you—it is right. Art isn’t about rules. It’s about resonance.

Support It Well—And Gently

Oversized artwork often carries weight, both physically and emotionally. Use picture hooks or wall anchors made for heavy pieces, and when possible, hang with two hooks instead of one for added stability and balance.

If you’re unsure, your local frame shop or hardware store can offer guidance. I always recommend taking a few moments to get this step just right—it's worth it for peace of mind.

Lean Into the Process (And Give Yourself Grace)

Use a level if you like—but also trust your eye. Some of the most beautiful homes I’ve stepped into had artwork that was slightly off-center or just a bit imperfect… and it made the room feel alive.

You’re not creating a gallery wall for a museum. You’re creating a sanctuary for your everyday life. It’s okay to take your time. It’s okay to try it one way, live with it, and shift it later.

That’s the beauty of art. It evolves with you.

Let It Change the Room

Once your piece is up, pause. Stand back. Take it in.

Notice how the space softens. How the light moves across the canvas. How something invisible becomes suddenly present.

Oversized art has a way of centering a room. It brings quiet. It invites conversation. It holds space.

Whether it’s an original painting that carries the texture of every brushstroke or a limited edition print chosen with care, when a piece finds its place, you’ll feel it.

And so will everyone who steps into your home.

A Gentle Encouragement from Me to You

If there’s a piece leaning against your wall right now, still waiting for its moment—I invite you to hang it. Not for perfection, but for joy.

Art isn’t meant to live in the shadows. It’s meant to be seen. To be felt. To become part of your daily rhythm.

Thank you—for bringing my artwork into your space, for creating a home full of beauty and story. It’s an honor to be part of that.

With deep gratitude and aloha,

Kim

Psalms of Hanalei – A Peaceful Tribute to the Hanalei Church on Kauai

Psalms of Hanalei | View Print

There’s a sacred stillness tucked along the North Shore of Kauai. If you’ve ever driven through Hanalei town, you’ve likely seen it—the little green church standing quietly among the palms, its peaked roof and stained glass catching the soft island light.

Known simply as the Hanalei Church, this cherished landmark has long been a symbol of faith, community, and resilience on Kauai.

The Story Behind Psalms of Hanalei

As an artist deeply inspired by the spiritual essence of Hawaii, I felt drawn to capture this moment in a way that felt reverent and alive. Psalms of Hanalei is my tribute to that sacred space—an original painting that honors both the serenity of the Hanalei Church and the quiet strength it seems to radiate into the valley around it.

This Hawaiian church painting was created with deep care and reflection. Each brushstroke is meant to feel like a whisper of song or prayer, echoing the calm that often fills the air around this beloved place. The misty mountains, the light filtering through palms, the stillness of a Sunday morning—all of it lives in this piece.

Limited Edition Canvas Prints

Now available as a limited edition archival print, Psalms of Hanalei is offered in two gallery-wrapped canvas sizes:

  • Medium: 20" x 25"

  • Large: 31" x 37"

Each print is hand embellished, printed on museum-quality canvas, and arrives ready to hang. It’s a piece of Kauai you can bring into your home—wherever that may be. Whether you’re looking to remember a special trip to the islands or simply want to add a meaningful piece of Hawaiian wall art to your space, this print carries with it a deep sense of peace and presence.

Ordering and Custom Sizing

We ship these prints with great care, and we kindly ask that you allow up to four weeks for printing. Custom sizing is also available—just give us a call at 808-757-8211, and we’d be happy to create something just right for your space.

Bringing the Beauty of Hanalei Into Your Home

Whether you’re a longtime collector or just discovering Hawaiian art for the first time, I hope Psalms of Hanalei brings a sense of grounding and beauty into your day.

With Aloha,

Kim

Pivoting with Purpose: A Personal Update

I just got back from California after a deeply healing week at OHI—and I’m feeling better than I have in a while.

I wanted to take a moment to check in with you, to share a bit of what’s been going on behind the scenes, and to let you in on some big changes that are ahead.

While I was away, I had a conversation with my neurologist that’s still sitting heavy on my heart. As some of you know, my journey with Parkinson’s has primarily affected the left side of my body, but my right hand—my painting hand—has continued to work. It’s been my lifeline, my livelihood, and my way of expressing everything I can’t always put into words.

During our conversation, we talked about the possibility that my tremors may eventually migrate to my right side. And while nothing is certain, the truth is, I’ve been thinking about what that might mean for me—and for my work.

To be honest, I’m scared. Painting is how I make my living, but more than that, it’s how I stay connected to beauty, to the ocean, to you. But I also believe in listening to the moment and pivoting with purpose.

So here’s what’s next:

I’m expanding my print collection in a big way. That means more variety, smaller editions, and more accessible options across different sizes and mediums. Whether you’ve collected my work before or are just beginning your journey with art, I want you to be able to find something that speaks to you—something meaningful for your home and heart.

And there’s more—I’m stepping into a new medium. One that’s less labor intensive, gentler on my body, and just as full of color, energy, and soul. It’s a whole new chapter in my career, and while it’s a little scary to start something unfamiliar, I’m also incredibly excited. This shift gives me a chance to explore, to grow, and to keep creating—just in a new way.

Thank you for being here, for loving this work, and for allowing me to evolve. I’ll keep sharing updates as this journey unfolds. In the meantime, the gallery is open, the prints are growing, and I’m finding new ways to tell stories with my hands—while I still can.

With aloha and so much gratitude, Kim

P.S.
I’m sharing more of this journey—moments in the studio, reflections, and behind-the-scenes glimpses—over on Instagram. If you’d like to follow along, I’d love to have you there.

If you’re on island in April, I’d love to show you what’s new!

If you’re on island in April, I’d love to show you what’s new!

There’s a quiet kind of magic that happens when you experience art in person. This month, I’d love to welcome you into the gallery to see what’s new—pieces inspired by soft mornings, salt air, and the beauty that lives in slowing down. Whether you're nearby or tuning in from afar, I’m so grateful to share this journey with you.
